1. Saying Goodbye to Nancy
It is with mixed feelings that we announce that Nancy Boudreau, School Office Administrator, will be retiring at the end of June after 19 remarkable years of dedicated service to the JICS Lab School.
Nancy is an outstanding administrator: kind, skilled, and deeply connected to the students, families, and school staff. She is at the heart of our school and an important contributor to the warm culture of JICS. Children know that Nancy has the “magic touch” to ice a bump, carefully remove a splinter, or gently address a scrape. Parents know they can reach out to her for information and that she will reach out to them with a reminder in the friendliest manner. Nancy is the first contact for most prospective parents and many current JICS families can recall the excitement of receiving a call from her to join JICS.
The role of office administrator requires meeting concurrent daily demands, scheduled and unscheduled. Nancy consistently maintains strong judgment and always prioritizes the safety and security of the children. She works diligently to help ensure a safe, efficient and welcoming space for all and always with genuine warmth and compassion. Meticulously organized, she has played a crucial role in developing and updating our new databases for applicants, current students, and alumni and she maintains a complex system of filing of documents and records. We will miss her administrative insights, her passion for the JICS community, and her dedication to details, big and small.
We wish Nancy every happiness as she moves forward in her life with her husband, Dave, their girls, and 3 beautiful grandchildren. We are determining how best to celebrate and acknowledge Nancy’s many contributions. Until then, please join us in extending our best wishes to Nancy for a long, happy, and healthy retirement: Nancy Boudreau nancy.boudreau@utoronto.ca

5. Everything You Always Wanted to Know about the JICS Principal Position Renewal/Hiring* (*that was not previously communicated)
Richard is appointed principal July 2015 by the Dean of OISE following a broadly advertised, open hiring search, chaired by the JICS Director with a committee of 11 individuals.
The term is for 5 years, ending June 1, 2020.
In Spring 2020, due to the complications caused by the pandemic, an “interim renewal/review” takes place (rather than a full renewal/hiring process) which extends the incumbent’s contract for one year.
In September 2020, the incumbent indicates his interest the Principal position.
In Spring 2021, a renewal/hiring committee is struck with representation from the 3 parts of the Institute (Lab School, MA Program, Laidlaw Research Dept), a current JICS parent, a JICS administrative staff member, and a faculty member of OISE. The committee is chaired by the JICS Director.
The committee consults broadly, seeking feedback from the JICS Parent Community, Teachers & Staff, and MA Professors/Researcher on the performance of the incumbent principal, as well as comments of a more general nature in relation to the Principal position. Comments are sent to (rhonda.martinussen@utoronto.ca) by Friday, April 9.
The committee will review the feedback and determine whether to proceed with the renewal process or to initiate an open hire process.
If it is deemed a renewal, the incumbent will also be asked to provide documentation listing accomplishments and future goals to be reviewed by the committee.
If a hiring is necessary, the University will communicate the next steps.
The previous JICS principal, who retired in June 2015, was similarly reviewed/renewed in this manner during her long career as principal.
We hope that this information is helpful.
