Parent Education Event: The Future of Education
Children will need to be able to address whatever challenges life, citizenship, and work will produce in the coming decades of unimaginable change. How can they develop the competencies they will need as adults?
What are the competencies, attitudes, and knowledge that are critical to develop (competencies that are well beyond the 20th century focus of content mastery and memorization)?
How can schools transform from being a source of basic skills for all and academics for some, to a source of rigorous learning for every child? What is the pedagogy that provides entry points and options for a new kind of learner?
The mission of the JICS Lab School is to explore what is possible. Our mandate is to improve public school education. We are calling for a restructuring of schooling – figuratively, a reconstruction of our understanding of the roles of the student and the teacher, and literally, a reconstruction of the facilities, processes, and structures that support student learning.
On October 29, in our JICS gym/auditorium, I will join a panel of leading educational experts in an interactive discussion on the future of education for an audience of teachers and teacher educators. We will discuss the future of Indigenous education, social and emotional learning, mental health and artificial intelligence in an engaging and interactive session.
JICS parents, I hope you can attend!

Teacher Professional Development
The International Association of Laboratory Schools (IALS) organizes tours of its member schools which are exciting opportunities to develop and enhance international ties.
In October 2016, a group of educators and administrators from schools around the world toured JICS and UTS in Toronto, Ontario and Carnegie Mellon University Children’s School and the Fanny Edel Falk Laboratory School, University of Pittsburgh, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
On the week of October 22-25, 2018, Chriss Bogert, Norah L'Esperance and I will attend the IALS Tour of Lab Schools 2018, joining former JICS Principal Elizabeth Morley who is the Chair of the IALS International Committee. This is a unique opportunity to share and encounter new schools and ideas while comparing innovative teaching practices, research and more.
Here is more information about the schools we will visit:
Monday October 22: The Children’s School at Mills College in Oakland (Early Years to Gr 5 school)
Tuesday October 23: Child Development Centers, University of California, Berkeley to learn about their long history and teacher preparation programs. Rosa Parks Elementary School to see its work with children and hear about its Professional Development connections to Mills College through the innovative Mills Teacher Scholars program.
Wednesday October 24 & Thursday October 25: Stanford’s Bing Nursery School in Palo Alto.
The 2018 Tour brings together educators with invaluable experiences to share. Chriss, Norah, Elizabeth, and I are part of an international group of teachers, administrators, researchers, and teacher educators – all associated with laboratory schools. Joining us will be representatives from:
The Children’s School, Carnegie Mellon University. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
