Part 1: Tuition Update
As you know, the University of Toronto sets the Lab School tuition fees. Budgeting is carried out using financial planning principles that are in place between the Jackman Institute of Child Study Lab School and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE/UT). These include the cost of services provided to the school by the University of Toronto, financial recognition of the school’s contributions to the University, and planning for upkeep improvements. The tuition fees for 2018-2019 school year will be announced, as they are each year, at the beginning of January 2018. I want to take this opportunity to inform you of 3 changes:
1. Non-tuition fees that have traditionally been collected separately from JICS tuition fees (Field Trip Fees; Snack Fees in Nursery to Grade 3; Tawingo Trip in Grades 3 & 4; Sandbanks Trip in Grades 5 & 6; sports club fees) will now be included in the tuition. Parents will not be asked to pay separately for these services beginning next year. A mean average has been calculated for each tuition. Exceptions are: a) the annual Gr 5 & 6 trip to Montreal or Ottawa will be paid separately by parents to the organizing company and b) any out-of-the ordinary learning opportunities, such as the recent Gr 2 to 6 field trip to Stratford Festival to view “Twelfth Night”, will be charged separately. I want to thank the many JICS parents and the JICS PA Exec who have suggested this change.
2. Each year, after we announce the tuition for the following year, re-enrolment forms and deposits are due in late January for returning students. Beginning this year, the non-refundable re-enrolment deposit will be $5000 for each child, payable to the University of Toronto. This $5000 will be deducted from the tuition amount that is owed in September. More information will be available in the first week of January, 2018 after the University of Toronto Governing Council approves the Lab School budget. Again, I want to thank parents for this suggestion – many have suggested spreading out the tuition costs to make it easier for families to budget. Parents have also suggested the option of paying tuition fees online. I will continue to work with UofT’s Financial Services to explore this option.
3. The enrolment fee for new families at JICS is and will continue to be $5000 for students entering at Nursery to Grade Two; $3000 for Grades Three to Four; $2000 for Grades Five and Six. JICS families will continue to be able to pay in $1000 annual instalments for children who are currently enrolled at JICS until their amount is paid. Beginning 2018, we will require that the full enrolment fee (corresponding to the Grade level entry) be paid in full at the time of offer of acceptance for all new children entering the school.
