6. Message from Kids Who Care Club

Dear JICS families,

Please read here to learn about the four branches of the Kids Who Care Club, a student-led club with amazing ideas on how people can care for each other and our world:

  1. Community Outreach Branch:

The Community Outreach Branch of the Kids Who Care Club is proud to announce that in total over 500 items were donated to the JICS food drive!! We want to thank everyone for supporting us and donating an unbelievable amount of food products. We want you to know that all these donations are going to a worthy cause. In Toronto, recently more and more people are using food banks. This inspired us to start a fundraiser to support it. Thank you again for your generous gifts to our Food Drive to support the Avenue Road Food Bank, which we delivered last week. They are serving 500 families in our community each week and were so grateful to receive our delivery. We wish you happy holidays and are looking forward to seeing you after the break.

2. Fundraising Branch:

We are the Fundraising branch of the Kids Who Care club. For weeks we have been working hard on making bookmarks and origami crafts that we recently sold at Book Night. As a group, we counted the money we collected, and we are thrilled to announce that we raised $413.95! In case you are unaware, we collaborated with the Children’s Health Issues Branch, and all of the money we raised is being used to purchase Get Better gifts for the children at The Hospital for Sick Children to bring joy over the holidays. We want to thank everyone who purchased raffle tickets or items from our stand, and we want you to know that your donations are greatly appreciated. Not only by us, but also by the families, staff, and children at Sick Kids.

 3. Children’s Health Issues Branch:

The students in the Children's Health issues Branch have been working with the Fundraisers Branch to raise money to donate to SickKids “Get Better Gifts”. For example, we chose to donate the money raised to something called a Helping Hand to help pay for the commute from other places to SickKids. The other gifts we choose the Transgender Youth Clinic, to help youth show the world who they are and feel truly good and comfortable with it; Cookies for All, for children in the hospital to enjoy a treat without worrying about food allergies; and Crib mobile, to provide a soothing, magical moment for a new baby spending their first days of life at SickKids. Thanks to the Fundraising Branch for making the epic crafts and organizing the raffle and raising the funds for our important cause!

4. Environment Branch (no pun intended):

The students in the Environment Branch have been working on a special project. We have been collecting paper scraps from all the classes to make into new paper! Basically, we made paper out of paper. First, we ripped the paper into small pieces. Then we put it in a blender with water, and made a goop out of it. Then we put it in a bin, mixed with more water. Next, we pulled a screen through it, catching some of the mush. Finally, we flipped it over, dabbed it with a sponge, and lifted the screen off. We let it dry for a few days, and now we have beautiful purple paper!! We made it all into special holiday cards, and working with the Community Outreach Branch, we delivered them to residents at the Annex Retirement Home this week. We made a total of 47 pieces of paper, and turned them into 46 cheery holiday cards! Hopefully we can make more paper in the new year, and make it into more cards! If you have any questions, please see the Kids Who Care Club leaders. If you have any extra used paper or paper scraps, we would be happy to take it. Thank you and happy holidays!

Thank you to everyone in our community for your donations and support!

Sincerely,

The Kids Who Care club
