1. Last Day of School - Tomorrow, Friday, June 12

All students will begin the day with our final school assembly of the year.

At 11:50 a.m., our JK to Grade 5 students will gather along a designated pathway in the playground to "clap out" our Grade 6 graduates as they make their final walk through the school community to the next exciting chapter of their lives.

All parents are warmly invited to participate. The playground gates will open for parents once the JK–Grade 5 students are in place along the route.

Day Care will operate from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Children attending Day Care will proceed there directly after dismissal. Please contact Anne Marie with any updates to your child's Day Care arrangements.

Please note that there will be no hot lunch program on Friday.

2. Goodbye, Graduates!

The graduation ceremony today was a perfect celebration of our amazing Grade 6 graduates! Thank you, Sarah, Walker, Nick, Christel, Judith, and Krista for all your work preparing the students. It was such a special day, with our students poised between their elementary school days and the next exciting chapters of their lives they will continue to live so beautifully. A lively reception followed the ceremony. Thanks to an incredible planning committee of Grade 6 parents and the help of many Grade 5 parent volunteers!

Grade 6 Parents, we are grateful for your trust in us and the nourishment and encouragement you have given these amazing graduates. You chose JICS all those years ago, or maybe you arrived just this year, and we thank you all. It has been a privilege to watch your child grow and flourish.

It is our pleasure to announce the Grade 6 Legacy Gift. In recognition of the importance of a learning community enriched by diverse life experiences and perspectives, the Grade 6 parents chose to direct their gift to the JICS Endowment Fund. Their generous contribution will help sustain and strengthen the economic diversity that has long been a defining feature of the Lab School experience. We are deeply grateful for the extraordinary commitment shown by this year’s graduating families, who achieved 100% participation and raised an incredible $35,100. This meaningful gift will have a lasting impact on future generations of JICS students and families.

We want to say a special goodbye and thank you to those families who have completed their Lab School journey and with this graduation, have finished their years here. To Alma and Sebastian, Catherine, Kim and Richard, Alex and Alex, Maggie and Adam, Heather and B.C., Jessie and Derek, Kenisha, Christina and James, Heather and Felix, Emilay and Paul, Rebecca, Chinnee and Michael, thank you for your support and remember, you are always a part of the JICS family!

We invite all families to enjoy the profiles of our graduates in the June issue of the School Newsletter.

3. Spring Term Newsletter

The Third Term JICS Newsletter is ready for you and will be sent home with your child. We invite you to read it together. This is an opportunity to “peak into” the school and learn about the Spring Term experiences that you may not know about. Use the password provided in the Weekly Info Email to access the newsletter online. A huge thank you to Victoria and Krista for editing and publishing the Newsletter and to all the student contributors and teachers for your help.

5. Performances Inspire Inclusivity and Acceptance at JICS: Support Our Arts Fundraising Goal

The children in JK to Grade 6 enjoyed the Queer Songbook Orchestra (QSO) performance this week. Weaving together story and song, the performance was an interactive exploration of identity and acceptance, nurturing understanding and inspiring inclusivity, love, and acceptance.

The QSO is one of the many enriching learning experiences supported by the JICS Patrick Harvie Arts Fund, established to enhance arts education at JICS by involving professional artists from our community. More information about the history of the fund and how to donate can be found here.

6. Hot Dog Night Photos

We hope these photos bring back wonderful memories of the fun, laughter, and community spirit that made last week’s Hot Dog Night such a special event. Once again, a heartfelt thank you to our Grade 1 parents for their extraordinary work in organizing this memorable Centennial Year celebration. It was a truly outstanding evening and a fitting highlight of our 100th year.

7. A Message from the Kids Who Care & The GSA

Dear Families,

Thank you for supporting our student-led drives and fundraisers this year! Please enjoy these updates from the GSA and the Kids Who Care Club.

Dear JICS families,

We are the Kids Who Care club (KWC) as you might know. Recently, at the amazing Hotdog Night (thanks to the Grade 1 parents!), all the KWC branches such as Community Outreach, Saves the Turtles, and Children's Health Issues (CHI), were selling homemade crafts and raising money for their separate causes. We raised the following amounts to go toward these causes:

  • $37 for the Children's Book Bank (Community),

  • $32 for the Canadian Sea Turtles Network (Save the Turtles)

  • $279 for Childhood Cancer Canada (CHI).

For a total raised of $348!!

We also ran a book drive for the Children’s Book Bank this Spring and this week we delivered over 2000 books from JICS families!!! The staff at the Book Bank were so happy to receive these books which will be distributed to their storefronts and be given out to children this summer. We also met with the coordinator, Megan Dee, who is a graduate of our MA program and a former intern in SK. Thank you to parents Casey, Kerry, and Angelle for joining us on this trip.

We would like to thank all the people who donated funds, brought in books for our book drive, or bought something from our stands and helped us contribute to these causes. Thank you again for all your help.

Sincerely,

The Kids Who Care Club

Hello from the JICS GSA!

We would like to thank our school community for supporting us this year. We held fundraising and awareness-raising tables at our annual Book Night and our Hot Dog Night, and through your generosity we have raised a total of $379.50, which we have donated to Rainbow Railroad. Rainbow Railroad is an organization that helps to relocate members of the 2SLGBTQIAP+ community who are living in places where they are in danger. Thank you so much!

We would also like to share with you a banner that our Grade 3 GSA members have completed. The students worked together seamlessly to design, draw, and finally paint their creation. They are very proud of the newest addition to our Pride-themed art here at JICS, and will be unveiling it to the school during our end-of-year assembly on Friday morning:

Our GSA members are already excited to begin the fall term, and have prepared Kahoot quizzes to share what they have learned about Pride and allyship with the rest of our student community.

8. JICS Library Books

Please look around your home to find any JICS library books and kindly return them to Krista ASAP. The school building is open all June.

9. Lost and Found

Tomorrow, the remaining unclaimed clothing will be donated. Parents please use these final days to check our collection. Ask Paige for directions!

10. Our Veggie Garden Needs You!

The JICS container garden is alive and well this year, and we are once again looking for families who would be interested in taking on a week of summer watering to help our veggies and herbs thrive. We are currently growing beans, kale, nasturtiums, tomatoes, pumpkins (with our seeds from Halloween!), cucumbers, raspberries, carrots, bell peppers, lettuce, anise, dill and thyme.

If you and your children are interested in a week of summer watering, please sign up here.

Of course, you are also encouraged to harvest the veggies during the summer and enjoy eating from our garden. We also welcome you to add your own herbs or veggies to the containers as well. After signing-up, we will contact you with instructions. Thank you for helping our plants survive the summer heat. The students always have fun when they come back to a fall harvest!
