3. Wednesday Afternoon Program
Dear JICS Parents,
The beloved JICS Wednesday Afternoon Program had many changes for the 25-26 school year, and I am extremely grateful for the support from this community and your amazing children as we introduced a new schedule, new programs, and a new format. The students took risks and tried things they may otherwise not have chosen for themselves, and I am so proud of each of them for the excitement and energy they brought to each program.
Last week, we surveyed the students and received great feedback that we will use to continue refining this new format and plan the 26-27 program over the summer. In addition to the amazing creations your children brought home throughout the year, please enjoy these online works by our Grade 1-6 students.
Wishing you all a wonderful summer break!

4. Our Public Purpose
At JICS, we are proud to be at the forefront of shaping elementary education and advancing teacher training on a global scale. Our commitment to sharing knowledge and driving innovation is reflected in the wide range of initiatives we lead and support.
Recent Highlights:
Our teacher-librarian, Krista Spence, wrote an article about our beloved annual Book Night for the Canadian School Libraries Journal to inspire and encourage other schools to organize their own celebration of reading, writing, and books.
Our JK teacher, Marcia Bumbury, will be teaching a Kindergarten Additional Qualification (AQ) course at the University of Toronto this summer.
Marcia will also be presenting at the Count Me In Conference in August. Designed by the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts and Science, this conference supports teachers, educators, and students in reducing math anxiety and creating positive math learning experiences. Marcia’s presentation, Play, Plan and Program – Early Years Math, will explore how students use loose parts and manipulatives to represent mathematical thinking, the role of games in developing counting principles, and how routines such as Number Talks can spark and consolidate learning, even in Kindergarten. Participants will engage with hands-on math tools, manipulatives, and games designed to inspire meaningful mathematical learning in the early years.
Chriss Bogert represents the JICS Lab School as a member of the Board of Directors for the International Association of Laboratory Schools (IALS). Chriss has recently completed her term as President and continues to serve as Past President, contributing to the ongoing leadership and strategic direction of the organization. In this role, Chriss participates in monthly Board meetings and plays an active role in planning and supporting events, initiatives, and opportunities for IALS members. Chriss will be attending the IALS Board of Directors Summer Meetings, taking place June 22–25 in Pittsburgh, where Board members will collaborate on priorities, establish strategic directions, and plan initiatives for the 2026–2027 school year.
