2. Supporting the JICS Library

We know that our students love to read and that books are cherished at JICS. Books can make us laugh, make us sad, and build our knowledge of the world. We believe it is essential for our students to have access to quality and diverse books. We are always on the hunt for new ones that explore topics that are important learning and we want to be certain that our curated collection represents a wide variety of perspectives and experiences, allowing all children to know they are valued and represented. Along with new additions, favourite books need to be replaced because they have been so loved.

As part of our PD Day at Six Nations of the Grand River First Nations Reserve on November 8, we visited GoodMinds Book Store, the leading source for purchasing bias-free teaching resources related to Indigenous studies, and added many books to add to our collection! 10% of all sales went to support libraries in First Nations communities.

The Jackman ICS Library runs an ongoing fundraiser through Indigo. When you purchase gift cards through this link, 20% of your purchase amount is given to JICS to spend on books! The gift card arrives in your email, and then online or in-person purchases can be made from Indigo.

Please consider using the link when you are purchasing for family, colleagues, or loved ones.

We will also be celebrating the love of reading with a JICS (Pyjama Party) Book Night on December 5, from 6:00-7:30 with a book fair by Another Story Bookshop. More details coming soon!

3. Lost and Found

Lost articles are stored in the hall outside near the courtyard near the Nursery classroom. Please take a look during parent/teacher interview times to see whether you identify any items that belong to you child. All items that have children’s names have already been returned to the child.

5. JICS Holiday Food Drive

Hello Parents,

The Grade Six social and Climate Justice Club is running a food drive to help the Avenue Road Food Bank. We would love for you to donate nonperishable food items, toiletries, baby products and more. All the products will be donated to the people in our community who visit the food bank because they can't afford to make ends meet. We would really appreciate it if you donated and it will give lots of people holiday joy.

People who shop at food banks need to do so for many reasons. Sometimes people

even have to choose between milk and shampoo, so donating toiletries is really helpful. When it is the holidays there is a lot of cheer. Let's share some to people who are not as lucky to have enough food. We will bring around boxes so classes can fill them with food. We are also collecting donations in the reception area by the fireplace. The due date to bring in food is December 10th as we will be delivering all the food to the food bank ourselves on December 11th. That is close to the holiday break so we will have an even bigger impact. The more food on the shelves of the food bank the better. During the holidays it’s nice when you come home to a full meal. At JICS we are very motivated to give a helping hand to others during the holidays.

Together we can make someone’s life change for the better. All you have to do is send non-perishable items, toiletries, or baby products with your kids to school. There they will put the items in a bin in their classroom and these will get collected by the club members and taken to the food bank. Thank you for reading and for helping the JICS Holiday Food Drive of 2019!

Sincerely,

The Social and Climate Justice Club

PS. The students in this club are learning about the importance of activism that works towards effecting change, and acts of charity that help to provide needed services. The Club will be engaged in both types of work this year and we thank you for your support! - Chriss Bogert, VP
