Tuition Support for families in Grades 3-6
Dear Jackman ICS Families,
I am writing today to send you information about applying for tuition support for 2019-2020. Jackman ICS is committed to needs-based financial support that will both enable increased diversity and retain current Laboratory school families.
The tuition support committee is working to actively expand economic diversity at Jackman ICS so that support will one day be available to families in the early years and primary grades.
Details about this year’s fundraising event will be shared soon!
Although our funds available limit our ability to respond to every request, we are pleased that the total financial support awarded in 2018-2019 was over $110,000.
Please consult the Tuition Support section of our website for information regarding the forms of support available and how to apply. The deadline for applications is November 10.
Diwali
We are grateful to the many parent volunteers who have planned activities for each class to celebrate Diwali this week. “Happy Diwali! May the joy and light of this beautiful holiday brighten your life, today and every day!”
Remembrance Day at JICS
The children, JK to Gr 6, will gather on Thursday to recognize Remembrance Day. 2018 marks the centenary of the First World War’s final year. The assembly will include songs of peace, a reading of In Flanders Fields by John McCrae, pairings of Special Friends lighting candles, and a minute of silence.
PD Day – Friday, November 9 (School closed, Daycare open)
During this day of professional learning, the JICS teachers and staff will explore the complex relationship between Indigenous culture and Western mathematics. Using examples from an ongoing research project, including videos of classroom instruction and student thinking, we will examine the mathematics inherent in traditional Indigenous artefacts, technologies, and activities and the kinds of mathematical thinking supported through engaging in these activities. We’ll also consider how incorporating Indigenous pedagogical approaches can provide insights for creating inclusive classrooms. Finally, we will consider the voices of community members as they reflect on the importance of including First Nations culture in the mathematics classroom.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Soon we will have our parent-teacher interviews with classroom teachers sharing their initial observations and early assessments regarding your child at school. Each teacher has emailed the link to the sign-up schedule. As partners in your child's growth and development, this is an important check-in for parents and teachers to discuss how to support and set up your child for success.
Interviews are 20 minutes long. Teachers are preparing to describe observations of your child’s progress to date and may share information from the specialty teachers. In addition to the classroom teacher, your interview time may include one or more of the following: MA intern, Special Ed teacher and/or Chriss or Richard. At JICS, the classroom teachers work collaboratively with the admin team, the specialty teachers, the interns, and the Spec Ed teachers. We meet weekly to discuss the progress and needs of children. Students do not have to be identified on the Spec Ed Caseload to benefit from this shared building of understanding. Our Special Ed teachers spend much of their time in the classroom and offer supports to all children; they provide a long-term multi-year view of the progress and development of children.
The fall interviews are an opportunity for a conversation with your child’s teacher who will share initial observations about your child’s academic profile as well as their social emotional development. We welcome your questions about your child and their progress at school and any information you may want to share that will help us to better understand your child and support their school experience.
Although we set aside formal parent-teacher interview dates, parent-teacher communication is continuous throughout the school year. We welcome and encourage open and honest conversations at any time so that we can work together to best support your child's learning and enjoyment of school.
