Odour Today at School

Dear JICS Families,

I am writing to inform you that the Contractor has confirmed that a floor sealer was installed today on the new gymnasium floor which was most certainly the cause of the odour witnessed today.

Although there is physical separation between the 45 Walmer Road building and the construction site, it is thought that the odour was able to migrate through to the 1950's wing of the building in some locations where there may be small gaps in the walls/partitions.

Sean O’Molloy, Project Manager (Project Management, University Planning, Design & Construction, University Operations, University of Toronto) reviewed the areas with the University of Toronto Environmental Health and Safety representatives and while no immediate risk was found, we are in agreement that we will have the Contractor take the following measures going forward:

  • Perform any further installation of sealer outside of school hours

  • Seal the gaps at all the temporary drywall partitions to the construction site

  • Install a negative air machine in the gym to prevent any fumes from leaving the work area.

The safety of the JICS children is my paramount concern. I thank you for your support and for your understanding that this change in schedule will result in a small delay in the completion date of the addition. The University has told us the addition will now be complete on December 2nd.

Please be in touch if you have any questions.

All the best,

Richard
