About The Event

Powering down, a digital fog, or igniting curiosity? Ways to support children's use of technology

We have all heard the pros and cons of technology use for our children but are they set in stone? Dr. Makos will touch on the key issues when understanding the role of technology, social media and child development by exploring how we can empower our children by learning more about what is actually happening when they use technology. Supported by the current research, she will explore the trends we are seeing (both before and during the pandemic), in addition to addressing those burning questions that we ask ourselves.

About Dr. Alexandra Makos

Faculty member in the Applied Psychology and Human Development Department, OISE, University of Toronto. Dr. Makos teaches courses that focus on the point of intersection between the fields of technology, psychology, and play against the backdrop of adolescent development, social media landscape and education. She also specializes in the design of learning experiences supported by technology and learning online. She has played an important role at OISE throughout her young academic career by developing both topical and engaging graduate level courses, and has been instrumental in helping the faculty transition to online course delivery prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Makos has two young children, 2.5 and 5 years old, and finds that all of her research and work is being brought to life as she moves through these experiences with her own family.

Please submit question in advance through your RSVP or directly to casey.dabiet@gmail.com. There will also be opportunities to ask questions through the chat during the talk.
