About The Event
Dr. Patricia Ganea
"Becoming a scientist: How do children learn science concepts and reasoning skills?"
Children enter school with many isolated facts and science misconceptions. What they are missing is a viable conceptual framework to link some of their isolated concepts together and to counteract some of their naive misconceptions. In this talk, Dr. Ganea and students Vaunam Venkadasalam an Nicole Larsen will present evidence on the importance of using picture books as a way to introduce young children to simple scientific concepts. They will also discuss the relative importance of both picture books and active experimentation in children's science learning.
Dr. Kang Lee
"Do your children have racial biases?"
In this talk, Dr. Lee and student Kitty Miao Qian present recent findings regarding the early emergence of implicit and explicit racial biases in children in Canada and other countries. They will also present exciting new evidence to show how young children's racial biases can be effectively reduced. Finally, they will discuss our new research initiative to reduce racial biases in the real world settings.
