Dr. Patricia Ganea

"Becoming a scientist: How do children learn science concepts and reasoning skills?"

Children enter school with many isolated facts and science misconceptions. What they are missing is a viable conceptual framework to link some of their isolated concepts together and to counteract some of their naive misconceptions. In this talk, Dr. Ganea and students Vaunam Venkadasalam an Nicole Larsen will present evidence on the importance of using picture books as a way to introduce young children to simple scientific concepts. They will also discuss the relative importance of both picture books and active experimentation in children's science learning.
