6. New Black History Display

"Black History is Our History" Artwork in 56 Spadina Entrance
"Black History is Our History" Project in 56 Spadina Entrance

We are delighted that we have a new prominent display of student work with the important message “Black History is Our History” in the beautiful stairwell of 56 Spadina. This work was made by the JICS Alumni, our Class of 2022, when they were in Grade 6. Here is the project in their words:

Hello! We're the Grade 6s, and we're here to share one of our projects for Black History Month. We wanted to make a big statement about Black History and its importance, and we brainstormed for quite a while about what to do.

Picture of the Daniels Building with "Support Black Designers" sign

Then we saw the Daniels Building, the architecture school at U of T. Maybe some of you have driven by there before and have perhaps seen the big letters on the windows spelling out "Support Black Designers." This is a great idea.

We decided to do something like that to show our allyship and support. We thought for a while about what to say with our message, and then we decided on "Black History is Our History." We chose this first because it's true, and second because we wouldn't have the present we have today without the contributions of Black people throughout history.

Here is what we made!
