Dear friends of JICS,
This is your final notice: registration for the JICS Centennial Golf Championship closes September 21st. As we celebrate 100 years of the JICS Lab School, this is your last chance to be part of our Centennial's marquee celebration.
Join us Friday, October 2, 2026 at Angus Glen Golf Club, we want as many of our families alumni and community on the course as possible. All skill levels are welcome — whether you're ready to show off your swing or picking up clubs for the first time, this day is about coming together as a community! Golf club rentals subsidized.
Don't have a full team? Register as a single golfer ($600) - or grab a friend and sign up as two singles. You'll share a cart, and we'll pair you into a full foursome!
Play for the Kids — Advancing Education since 1925
Family bragging rights are on the line: the winning foursome picks a grade to receive a pizza party — and leads the school in an assembly activity of their own imagining. Come show off your swing, or pick up clubs for the first time; this day is about our community coming together.
Your participation supports the JICS Endowment Fund, opening the Lab School to families who could not otherwise attend. At JICS, diversity isn't an aspiration — it's a moral imperative. An inclusive community of wide-ranging lived experiences makes our research richer and strengthens the dissemination of our work that improves public education far beyond our walls.

3. Parents' Association Annual Membership Contributions
As a JICS parent, you are automatically a member of the Parents’ Association. The ongoing efforts of the Parents' Association are 100% funded through your annual membership contributions and generous donations. Below are the three tiers - choose the tier that best fits your needs.
Equity: $100-$224 per family
Selecting this option presents a (more) inclusive opportunity to enable all of our community members to contribute in a way that best fits their current finances.
Equality: $225 per family
These are the at cost donations. If everyone made this contribution amount, the PA could cover its costs. We suspect many of our families will fall under this pricing.
Opportunity: $226 or more per family
This option presents an opportunity to enable another family to make a contribution using the equity range. *Each additional increment of $125 above the listed contribution in the opportunity option would allow one additional contribution to be made within the equity price range.

4. Curriculum Night - Wednesday, September 23, 6:00-8:00pm
We are looking forward to seeing all JICS Parents at Curriculum Night. This is a special and important evening designed for you to learn all about the exciting year ahead for your child. Our teachers have thoughtfully prepared to share what your child’s class will be exploring, learning, and accomplishing this year. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions about the curriculum and teaching methods. While this event isn’t meant for individual parent-teacher conferences (those will be held on November 11 and 13), it will give you a comprehensive look at what is in store for your child, the teachers they will be learning from, and the expectations for their grade level.
What to Expect: The evening will begin with entry through 45 Walmer Road, starting at 5:45 PM. Below is the schedule to guide you through the night.
6:00 PM – 6:45 PM: Curriculum presentations for parents of children in Nursery, JK, SK, Grades 1 & 2. (Please note that these presentations will start promptly at 6:00 PM, so we encourage you to arrive on time.)
6:50 PM – 7:05 PM: All parents will gather in the school gym for an introductions of classroom and specialty teachers and a message from Chriss and Richard.
7:10 PM – 7:55 PM: Curriculum presentations for parents of children in Grades 3, 4, 5, & 6.

Specialty Classes: Curious about subjects like French, Visual Arts, Drama, Phys Ed, Special Ed, Library, Music, STEM, and Land-Based Education? During Curriculum Night, a specialty teacher will join one of the classroom teachers to give a brief overview of their program. Plus, all specialty teachers will be introduced in the gym at 6:50 PM. A more detailed look at the specialty classes will also be included in a future POST.
Please note this is an adults-only event and unfortunately we are unable to provide babysitting services.
5. Terry Fox Run - Friday, September 25
The Grade 3 students are busily working on making announcements, organizing a school assembly, and an opportunity for each class (JK to Grade 6) to participate in the Terry Fox Run at Jean Sibelius Park on Kendal Avenue on September 25. The run will take place with a departure from the school at approximately 9:15am and we invite all parents to take part to cheer us on. Huge thanks to parent volunteers for helping with supervision along the route!
Each year, we ask everyone to bring “a toonie for Terry” or more to donate to cancer research. You can also donate directly to the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study Terry Fox Donation Page.

6. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - Wednesday, September 30
On Wednesday, September 30, we will honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. More information about how we will recognize this important day at JICS will be shared in next week’s POST.
If your family is considering purchasing an orange shirt, we encourage you to consider purchasing from Indigenous businesses and artists, so that your purchase directly supports Indigenous communities.
The Cedar Basket Gift Shop, located just south of the school at the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto (16 Spadina Road), offers an online shop with youth and adult sizes of Every Child Matters T-shirts.
JICS Orange Shirt Swap
Another option is to take part in the Orange Shirt Swap inspired by JICS’s Natural Curiosity Program. This is a simple way for our community to honour the spirit of the day while also giving clothing a second life.
Has your child’s orange shirt become too small? Rather than leaving it in a drawer, pass it along to another child who can wear it—and perhaps find a new-to-them, larger shirt for your own child in return!
How it works:
Starting Friday, September 18, we will collect clean orange shirts of all sizes—child, youth, and adult—in the school lobby.
Families are welcome to contribute shirts that their children have outgrown.
Families can browse the collection and take a shirt that fits their child.
If your child finds a new-to-them shirt, we encourage families to consider making a donation to The Caring Society, which supports equity for First Nations children and young people, as well as reconciliation-based activities for children across Canada.
We hope the Orange Shirt Swap will be one small way our community can come together with care, generosity, and a commitment to remembering. 🧡
We look forward to seeing a sea of orange at JICS on September 30 as we honour the truth, remember the children who never returned home, and support residential school Survivors and their families.
7. Andre De Grasse's Visit
JICS was honoured to host Andre De Grasse, one of Canada’s most celebrated Olympians, yesterday morning. Our JK to Grade 6 students, along with parents and staff, were treated to a special preview screening of two inspiring films from Andre’s new series with CBC Kids, exploring themes of sport, perseverance, resilience, and growing up.
Andre was interviewed by Luke, our Phys. Ed. teacher, and generously shared his experiences with our students. He also thoughtfully responded to questions from the audience, making for a truly memorable morning.
We were especially proud that JICS was selected to host one of the preview screenings of this exciting new series.
For parents who are interested in supporting Andre’s work with young people, donations can be made to the Andre De Grasse Family Foundation, a charitable foundation dedicated to inspiring and empowering youth through access to sport, education, and healthcare. The Foundation provides young people with opportunities to discover and reach their own unique potential.
8. Natural Curiosity Announcement

Natural Curiosity’s Fall Kanyen’kéha (Mohawk) Course starts this week!
Led by Tahnee Bennett (Turtle Clan, Six Nations), a Mohawk educator and graduate of the Onkwawenna Kentyohkwa immersion program, this course offers a meaningful opportunity to learn the language and connect with community.
This course is open to everyone – both Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants who wish to learn to uplift language revitalization. If you are a non-Indigenous language learner, we invite you to review these reflections on what it means to be a non-Indigenous learner in an Indigenous language learning course.
