Frequently Asked Questions

Before School Care: Where/When/How?


Morning care will be located in the library (45 Walmer Road main entrance, foyer to left prior to entering school reception). Parents will escort their child/ren and their child’s belongings to Luis Alves (Daycare staff) who will be at the library entry. Supervision will begin at 8:00am. If parents arrive before 8:00am, they will need to line up with their child in a socially distant manner until 8:00am. Parents are not permitted into the library or any other part of the school. Daycare staff will dress and escort the JK and SK children to the yard (SK to yard east and JK to yard west) and Nursery children (Nursery West to courtyard, Nursery East to Art room) at 8:45/8:50am. Students in Gr 1-6 will travel independently directly to their classroom at 8:45/8:50am.




After School Daycare Pick-Up: Where/When/How?


Nursery (pick up at 3:00 or 3:15pm):

  • Nursery children with siblings in Kindergarten will be escorted outside at 3:00pm by Daycare staff who will remain in the yard for supervision. These children will line up in the yard with their sibling/s and await their parent to arrive at North School Yard Gate (for JK and their Nursery siblings) or South School Yard Gate (for SK and their Nursery siblings).
  • Nursery children with siblings in Gr 1-3 will be escorted outside at 3:15pm by Daycare staff who will remain in the yard for supervision. These children will line up in the yard with their sibling/s and await their parent to arrive at North School Yard Gate (for Gr 1 and their Nursery siblings) or South School Yard Gate (for Gr 2 or Gr 3 and their Nursery siblings).

After School Daycare (pick up between 3:30 and 6:00pm):

  • Parents are required to call the ICS Daycare cell number 647-518-6887 upon arrival at the North School Yard Gate. Parents are not allowed into the school yard. Daycare staff will dress (if help is needed) and escort the child/ren to the North School Yard Gate. If the children are outside in the yard, the Daycare staff will enter the school with the child/ren to collect personal belongings before escorting the child/ren to the North School Yard Gate.




How do children transition from the school to after school daycare?


Nursery: At 11:45am, Nursery children from Nursery East will be escorted to Nursery West room to join the daycare cohort.

JK and SK: At 3:00pm, Daycare staff will pick up Kindergarten children from the school yard and escort them and their belongings to JK A classroom which is disinfected at 2:30-3:00pm prior to use. If indoors, Daycare staff will pick up JK B, SK A and SK B children from their classroom and escort them and their belongings to JK A classroom.

Gr 1-3: At 3:15pm, Daycare staff will pick up Gr 1-3 children from the school yard and escort them and their belongings to Gr 1 A classroom. Gr 1 A classroom will be disinfected by daycare staff 2:45 - 3:15pm.

Gr 4-6: At 3:15pm, students will walk directly to the gym. Daycare staff will provide their own dedicated equipment and activities for this group.




How will snack be provided?


Daycare staff will serve a commercially prepared (store bought), individually wrapped snack to students. Single serving whole fruits (fruits that have not been cut) can be served. Staff will be wearing medical masks and face shields at all times. Children will wash or sanitize their hands prior to eating their snack. Children with masks will be guided how to safely remove their mask during eating. Children will wash or sanitize their hands after eating snack.




Communication: How do parents get in touch with Daycare staff?


The ICS Daycare cell phone 647-518-6887 is dedicated to announcing parent arrival for pick-up. To communicate information with the Daycare, parents are required to email ics.after.school.daycare@gmail.com This email is monitored throughout the day. A response email will be sent to notify parents that the information has been received.




Who can pick up my child?


Upon registration, parents provide the Daycare with a list of adults who may pick their child/ren. If a new adult is necessary for pick-up, parents are required to email ics.after.school.daycare@gmail.com to inform the Daycare of the identity of the adult. Upon arrival, the adult must follow the pick-up procedures and provide identification to the Daycare staff.




What are the Daycare cohorts and what is their location?


  • Nursery cohort in Nursery West

  • JK and SK daycare cohort in JK A

  • Gr 1-3 daycare cohort in Gr 1 A

  • Gr 4-6 daycare cohort in Gym




Can I register for Daycare after the school year begins?


Families who wish their child/ren to join after the start of the school year, must inquire with Anne Marie Bartoli (Daycare Supervisor) regarding availability/staffing. If space/staffing is available, parents will be informed that children can join on the first of a month. Registration requires a commitment until the end of the term (e.g. December, March, June). Families in each daycare cohort will be notified of increase to the cohort size/group.




What is the hand washing routine?


Children will be required to wash or sanitize hands before entering the Daycare. They will be required to wash or sanitize their hands before and after eating snack. They will be required to wash or sanitize their hands before and after going out into the school yard. Daycare staff will model, support and supervise the washing or sanitizing of students’ hands.




Where will my child’s belonging be located?


In order to minimize movement in the building, children’s belongings will be brought to their Daycare location and remain with them indoors and in the school yard.




How will play materials be used and cleaned?


Material will be one-time, one-child per day use only. After use, all materials will be disinfected by Daycare staff.




What will students be doing on Wednesday afternoons (following 12:00pm dismissal)?


Wednesday afternoon is an extension of the regular Daycare daily program. On Wednesday, children will eat lunch in their dedicated space (either litterless lunch from home or individually packaged hot lunch from The Lunch Mom which will be delivered to the classroom). They will wash/sanitize their hands before and after eating lunch.

Following lunch, children will have outdoor play time, and engage in a variety of activities based on the children’s interests, encompassing art, crafts, games, sports, cooking and other projects.




Will children wear masks?


Children in Gr 4-6 are required to wear masks at all times indoors except those with a pre-existing medical condition. Children in younger grades are strongly encouraged to wear masks in public spaces indoors. If a child wears a mask during the school day, they will be supported to wear the mask during Daycare.

According to the Ministry of Education, masks are optional during outdoor play: “mask breaks are best to occur outdoors while maintaining physical distancing as best as possible”. Children will need to store their own mask when outdoors.




What PPE will Daycare staff be required to wear?


All Daycare staff will wear medical masks and face shields. Staff utilize gloves when required.




Are Daycare staff required to self-screen before coming in to work?


All Daycare staff are required to self-assess each morning. Staff are required to check whether they or any other member of their household have any of the following symptoms: Fever/feverish, new onset of cough, worsening chronic cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, decrease or loss of sense of taste or smell, chills, headaches, unexplained fatigue/malaise/muscle aches, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, pink eye (conjunctivitis), runny nose/nasal congestion without other known cause. Daycare staff who are ill or are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 are required to remain home. If a Daycare staff member is tested negative for COVID-19, they can return to school after being symptom free for 24 hours, and after they pass the aforementioned daily screening questions.




What happens if a child or adult tests positive with COVID-19?


The Daycare and school are obligated to inform Public Health and the community if a child or adult tests positive for COVID-19. Public Health will inform us of next steps and this will be communicated to the parents and staff community.
