About Another Story Bookshop Book Fair at JICS

Located in the West end of Toronto, Another Story Bookshop sells a broad range of literature for children with a focus on themes of social justice, equity, and diversity. On December 5th, they will set up shop right here at JICS in the lobby of 56 Spadina Road.

The books will be on sale during the day on Thursday December 5th from 9:30-4:00, and then 5:30-8:00. Twenty per cent of the book sales will be donated to the JICS Library as credit.

About Fatima and Amna Sultan

Fatima Sultan and Amna Sultan are the10 and 8-year-old founders of Two Sisters on a Mission and authors of the book “Anything is Possible”. They appeared on the TV show Dragons’ Den and have been invited to speak to thousands around the world. They are on a mission to bring the world together by bringing the art, the stories, the struggles and the talent of artists from remote parts of the world within reach of others. Their inspiring message to children is that the world will not change if we all wait for others to act, rather each of us, including children, can take initiative and make a difference.

Why do we fundraise for the Library?

The Book Fair provides funds for our library to purchase diverse high-quality books. The Raffle helps us to bring authors, illustrators, and storytellers to our school to work with our students. This is a fantastic opportunity to come together as a community during these dark winter evenings!

Parent Volunteers

We are also looking for volunteers to help sell raffle tickets outside the front door from 8:20-9:00am on Dec. 2,3,4, and 5. Sign up here!

2. Lice Check – Monday, November 25

Professional lice check experts will be at the school on Monday, Nov 25 to do a school-wide lice check. This is a newly planned visit in response to multiple reported cases of lice this week.

The school notifies parents of children if evidence of head lice has been found so that children can be picked up. Before returning to class, the children must be free of nits and must report to the school office to ensure their status. All parents are encouraged to keep a continual check at home and are required to report any case of lice or nits to the school office.

3. Note from JICS Trash Team

The wrappers-recycling campaign that was launched on Halloween has been a huge success! Over the past 13 days since launching the campaign and introducing the Terracycle box at our school assembly, we have collected over 700 wrappers from our community. That means there are 700 less wrappers ending up in the landfill and polluting our beloved Earth. Thank you for your help. Our box is full and will be shipped to Terracycle for recycling. Should this be a new tradition at JICS? Let us know! Email Raadiyah Nazeem

Trash Team Tip:

Reuse old art! Do you draw, colour, and paint at home? Some masterpieces we keep and others we discard. Before discarding your art, think of another way you can use it. Can it be GOOS (good on one side) paper? If you are really unsure of how you can reuse your old drawings/paintings, please bring them to school and the Trash Team will find ways to reuse. We have been recycling unclaimed art from classrooms to enhance our posters and displays and we can do the same with your pieces.

Thanks,

The JICS Trash Team
