Curriculum Night (Wednesday, October 10) and other School News

Information about Curriculum Night 2018

Why Curriculum Night?

Curriculum Night is the most important parent education event of the year and we expect that all parents will attend. This is your opportunity to learn about what your child’s class will be experiencing and accomplishing this year. Questions you may have about what is taught and how we teach will be addressed. Although it is not an interview about your child (parent/teacher interviews will take place on November 14 & 21), Curriculum Night gives you the fullest picture of the year your child is in, the teachers your child is with, and the expectations and plans for learning at your child's grade level.

What is the schedule of the evening?

For Curriculum Night 2018 on Wednesday, October 10, entry to the school will be from 45 Walmer Road or 56 Spadina Road at 5:45 pm. If your child is in Nursery to Gr 1, please note that the presentation by the classroom teachers will begin in the classrooms promptly at 6:00pm.

5:45 Babysitting begins in Rooms 120 (younger) & 275 lunch room (older). Children registered for babysitting who are in Daycare will be escorted by the Daycare staff to the babysitting rooms.

6:00 (sharp) - 6:45 (sharp) Curriculum Presentations for Nursery, JK, SK, Gr 1 parents

6:50 - 7:05 ALL PARENTS AND CLASSROOM AND SPECIALTY TEACHERS gather in School Gym for Welcome & Introductions

7:10 (sharp) - 7:55 (sharp) Curriculum Presentations for Gr 2, 4, 5, 6 parents

8:00 Babysitting ends

*PLEASE NOTE: the Grade 3 Curriculum Presentation will be on Oct 2*

How will we learn about the Specialty Classes (French, Visual Arts, Drama, Phys Ed, Special Ed, Library, Music)?

This year, we are producing short documentaries about each specialty subject. The specialty teachers have described their program and you will be able to glimpse into their classrooms. A link to these videos will be sent out soon. All specialty teachers will be introduced in the gym at 6:50pm on Curriculum Night.

Is there babysitting?

Yes! Please RSVP here. Deadline for babysitting registration is October 8, 2018.

A pizza dinner will be provided for the children (ordered from Pizzaiolo - nut free). Please send a water bottle for your child. Thank you to the Parents’ Association for funding the babysitting and pizza!

Other News From the School

Sandbanks Trip for Gr 5 & 6

Our Grade 5 and 6 students have stories to share and memories that will last a lifetime from their trip to Sandbanks Provincial Park. This, like so many school events, is an experience that expands children's independence, social skills, problem-solving, and joy in learning.

Across the grades, these are attributes we work hard to foster and we thank you for your support of these important goals. I want to take this opportunity to also thank the teachers for making this trip so perfect: Ben, Mary Jane, Michael, Nick, Tory and the interns. These adults took time away from their families to ensure that each child had a safe and fun experience. I also want to thank the parents for their patience with the late arrival of the rental truck with all the luggage and camping gear. Your generous help with unloading reminded us all how lucky we are to be part of this community.

More information about this annual trip and other over-night JICS field trips, please refer to the Parent Handbook.

Arbor Awards

The President of the University, Professor Meric Gertler, confers awards on noted volunteers at the University each year. This year, we are fortunate to have two Lab School alumni parents recognized for their years of volunteer service to the Lab School. Join me in thanking:

  • Angela Goldman (parent of Natasha and Adam) for her contributions to the JICS Integrated Kindergarten Program at Bloorview School Authority, the JICS Patrick Harvie Arts Fund Committee (organizing community events to raise funds to enrich the Arts at JICS), and the Dean’s Advisory Board. Since 2012, Angela has been a valuable member of the JICS Diana Rankin Muncaster Family Tuition Support Committee.

  • Linda White (parent of Allie and Geneva) for her work on the JICS Child Study Research Review Committee. From 2009 to 2018, Linda vetted over 50 research studies, providing insightful feedback and deciding whether the applications met our standards. She encouraged research that is relevant to educational issues and that fosters a strong community of researchers and teachers, working together to strengthen best-practices in educating young-children.

Financial Assistance

At Jackman ICS, we believe that every child who would like to be involved in our school and daycare should have this opportunity regardless of the availability of family funds for these programs. If you would like to discuss financial assistance for any Jackman ICS program, please speak to me about our funds for this purpose.
